Replacing your spark plugs is an important part of routine maintenance and servicing for your engine. Without a set of fully functioning spark plugs, you can notice running issues such as poor fuel economy, lack of acceleration or general performance, poor idle conditions, cylinder misfires, hard starting or even an engine that won't run at all. Making sure your spark plugs are fresh, clean, free of fouling or deposits and not cracked or broken in any way will ensure a strong spark that can ignite the fuel properly and reliably each time. Between replacement periods for your spark plugs, use a spark plug socket to remove the plug and perform a quick visual inspection. Examine for any oil or fuel deposits known as fouling on the tip of the plug which can hamper spark performance. You'll also want to look out for any damage to the spark plug threads and any cracks or other marks on the spark plug.

If you're chasing down a spark issue or a misfire issue, there are some other parts to test or replace along with the spark plugs as they all work together as a system. The spark plug leads, ignition leads or HT leads are tasked with delivering power to the spark plug which allows it to spark and ignite the fuel. With a break in the wiring, a short or other types of damage which can happen over time, the spark plug will never receive the power needed to issue the spark. The ignition coil is also something which should be checked / replaced as this generates the initial power which is then sent to the plugs via the ignition leads. Over time these can become weaker and not issue enough power for a strong and reliable spark, resulting in misfires.
